salam abjim,

“Political aspects
The filmmakers assert that any parallels to the Iraq War have not been intended.[66] The studio and filmmakers had discussed the sensitive issue about the film’s “contemporary resonance” of the East versus West conflict.[67]
Snyder reports that after advance screenings, he was taken aside by reporters at a screening for the international press, and asked about political implications by one reporter who insisted that Xerxes had to be symbolizing George W. Bush, only to have a second reporter suggest that Leonidas represented Bush. At a later showing at the Berlinale, Snyder says he was asked “Don’t you think it’s interesting that your movie was funded at this point?” Snyder recalled being asked in Berlin. “The implication was that funding came from the U.S. government.”[66]”

was ein griechischer filmkritiker dazu sagt:
* Greek critic Dimitris Danikas criticized the movie for showing Persians as “bloodthirsty, underdeveloped zombies,” and went on to say, “They are stroking racist instincts in Europe and America.”[58]
I didn’t want to comment on this movie before I see it. now that i saw it here are my thoughts:
I don’t think that there’s any need to mention that from a historical point of view the movie has no value whatsoever and it is obvious that it was never meant to be historically accurate or else it could never fulfill its purpose. in fact after watching this movie you cannot say one thing about either the Persians of the Greeks that would somehow describe them at that time; socially, racially, etc.
from a cinematographic point of view the movie was simply horrible; sloppy plot with little substance, repetitive fight scenes that just became boring after the first couple of battles accompanied with repetitive virtually unchanged special effects and last but not least too many LOUD scenes. the guy yelled out the entire script for no reason. did the Spartans suffer from a chronic genetic hearing disorder?!
it was another typical good vs bad type of a movie before they decided to call one side “the Persians” and the other side the “Spartans” and base it on an actual historical event that is believed to have played an important role in the history of both sides. only a few minutes into the movie and it became Asia vs Europe, Free men vs the tyrant, Cowardly vs courage etc. It was a western Jihad movie glorifying death and sacrifice for values “beyond the comprehension of their enemy” reminiscent of what the “Islamic extremist” preach to their people! it was a sorry attempt to give the current epic battle of good vs evil a sense of longevity and history; that’s what our ideological ancestors did and we follow their footsteps. It WAS a movie full of hidden messages and anyone denying that is as much a fool as Miller himself. The movie is heavily political and one-sided with racism all over it with history cleverly put aside in order to make the job easier.
fiction or not fiction you can still make a movie that caries hateful messages and insults people in it, more so in a movie that IS based on an actual event involving two NON-fictional nations that still exist. in fact if the movie was at least partially based on the accepted historical accounts of this event any complain regarding why one side was depicted in a certain way would automatically be rendered invalid due to the historical accuracy of the movie. therefore I believe the argument that it’s only based on a comic book does NOT hold at all.
this movie does belittle Persians or rather glorifies west and demonizes East in general, it does relate to the current dynamics of our world in a manner that can only be intentional, and it does reflect the opinion of many westerners as the sole beacon of hope, civilization and honor throughout the history (after their wholy descend from the trees).
having said all of this, this movie is no more than a cheap shot. too stupid to be taken seriously by any Iranian. as least it’s not any worst than what they tell about us on daily basis. i do think the whole Iranian community around the world have over-reacted to this movie because it involves our proud history and also due to the fact that we’re just fed up of hearing BS on daily basis about what we do or now what we have done! it is not a case deserving as much an effort as lets say the “Arabian Gulf” case.
only if the mighty Spartans knew who would claim to be the bearer of their LOOOOUUUUUD message!!
Ach Kakum…
